NewJeans ‘s Danielle Apologieses For Calling Lunar New Year “Chinese New Year”

On January 19, Danielle, a member of the popular girl group NewJeans, made a mistake on the fan communication platform Phoning. She asked her fans, “what r u bunnies [NewJeans’ fans] doing for Chinese New Year?”

This statement was met with backlash as Lunar New Year is a holiday celebrated by many countries across Asia, not just China. The use of the term “Chinese New Year” is often considered offensive to non-Chinese Asians who also celebrate the holiday.
